Rock Me Mama Like a Wagon Wheel

November 30, 2008

I was looking back at photos from only about a week ago… the 16th of Nov and the 20th.. when Pedie was still a mystery growing inside of my belly.

Since I have been in Colorado the last several weeks, we have started a tradition with sisters Emmy and Sarah that I like to call the Boulder Breakfast Brunch. Every Sunday we meet in Boulder at a different spot for brunch. We seems to have guest stars each Sunday… first it was the other Sara, then Kim Smith, then Amber. It is so nice! Something to look forward to.

These first couple photos are the 16th of Nov when I was a little past 38 weeks….

The next photos are again with Sarah and Emmy and are at the Old Crow Medicine Show concert in Boulder just a mere 3 days before I was induced and met my angel. She was moving and grooving… it is also OCMS who is known for their song Wagon Wheel which is what the Hot Strings covered at our wedding for us… one of my fav songs ever. I can’t believe my pregnancy is over and I have Pedie in my arms listening to OCMS…

and we will make room for her at the table for the Boulder Bkft Bunch!

Sweetest Pedie was born on 11/24/08 at 0009 … she barely missed the 23rd :)
6lbs 13 oz
19 3/4 in

She is absolutely perfect and we could not be more blessed. As we get more accustomed to our new schedule, I will write more about the birthing experience…. it was amazing and beautiful. I was in labor for about 17 hours with an hour of pushing. It was beautiful and I cannot even express my gratitude, and how incredibly thankful I am on this Thanksgiving for my most loving and supportive husband, my healthy pregnancy, birth and life of our new baby girl and for all of you… our friends and family. Thank you for all of your love and support… we could not be healthier or happier…

*****AND FOR ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE ON HER FIRST DAY… PLEASE READ Sarah’s Blog****

More pictures to come… many, many more! :)

Much love and Happiest of Thanksgivings…

LUCKY

November 15, 2008

There’s this kind of lucky…

and then there is this kind of lucky….

img_1079

This was a picture of Dennis and I almost exactly 2 years ago…. a perfect Thanksgiving in a cabin in the Maine woods… did I really know how lucky I was then? I think so… do I know how lucky I am now? Definitely. Life tumbles and twists through sharp angles and u-turns… I have learned many times along the way that each and every stop and pause are right where they need to be.

I am lucky for so many reasons… lucky for the beauty witnessed through these eyes, the interactions pondered and realized, the life that has attached itself to my red blood cells to keep me and another human alive, even the pain, tears, breaking points, fears… I look back to every moment and I am lucky. I am lucky to have this little corner table at Bookend Cafe in Boulder CO, lucky to find an outlet for my dead battery so I can type this entry, lucky to see the 3 elderly folks sitting next to me at their table… 2 gentlemen… their dark sweaters sharply end at the collars of their dress shirts underneath.. the wrinkles hiding under their glasses show every smile, sleepless nights, heartbreak, love, joy and their third person, a proper lady who smiles at a baby passing by in her mother’s arms, her hair neatly done, her lipstick perfect, her earrings dainty.

Lucky to have traveled around the country in pursuit of my dream.. to be so close the end… the day when I will be trusted with another’s life, to be able to have the authority and knowledge to tell someone they are going to be ok… or to tell them we are going to do everything we can to help them, to make them feel better so that they might see beauty through their eyes, that they might feel the life attach to every blood cell, to sit next to a table of elderly folks smiling and laughing… so they know how lucky they are for each and every experience in their lives.. if only a flicker or a fleeting breeze.

Do we realize how lucky we are? Before it’s too late? I see so many patients in the ER who wait until their loved one is unconscious, dying or lifeless before they admit how much they love them, before they say how much they care… should it take such dire consequences before we tell each other how important we are? How about now?

SO… I am lucky. I am lucky for the love that fills these walls… the friends who have remained by my side through life’s tumbles and turns… the love that I get to return to them… I am lucky that out of the billions of people, the infinite number of situations or interactions, that I was able to meet the man who I call my husband… and that we are able to create another life with that love. Nothing is better. I am lucky for the healthy 9 months that I have had, the support from family and friends, the overlapping success of medical school during this period. It has been trying, but rewarding.

Look around you. What are you thankful for? What are you lucky to have in your life? WHO are you lucky to have in your life? Even if it’s not the way you planned, not what you thought what you wanted… did it work out? Let’s be thankful for the delicate wrinkles that surround our eyes, for they show everyone at other tables in the cafe the life that we have lived, the love we have experienced, the pain that has made us grow. For without these lines, this map of our lives we don’t amount to much. I am so thankful… and yes…

lucky.

Ozomatli!

November 8, 2008

Ozomatli was playing up in Boulder last weekend… how could we resist going?!?! If you haven’t heard of them… you should. My favorite album is self-titled Ozomatli:

5372941

which is the one I would HIGHLY recommend going out and grabbing! Here’s a blurb from Pandora.com :

“Brewing a vital concoction of Latin salsa, urban hip-hop, and jazz-funk, Ozomatli formed in Los Angeles in the mid-’90s, eventually settling on a lineup that included Raúl “El Bully” Pacheco, Ulises Bella, Jiro Yamaguchi, Cut Chemist, Chali 2na, Wil-Dog Abers, Mairo Calire, Rene “Spinobi” Dominguez, Justin “Niño” Porée, Asdrubal Sierra, and Jabu. After making their name on the local club circuit, the group made an appearance on the urban late-night talk show Vibe! and released their self-titled debut in June 1998. Embrace the Chaos was released in 2001, followed by an EP, Coming Up, in 2003. A third full-length, Street Signs, which featured a changed lineup (both Cut Chemist and Chali 2na, for example, left the group on good terms), came out in 2004 and subsequently won a Grammy. A concert CD, Live at the Fillmore, with an accompanying DVD of the show, was released in 2005, unofficially honoring the group’s tenth anniversary, and in 2007 Don’t Mess with the Dragon came out. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide”

SOOOO much fun!!! And they reunited with Chali 2na for this tour (who has the most amazing hip-hop voice/abilities ever!) who is also in Jurassic 5.
